Dear Editor
The Indian hair sheitel controversy has been going on for a long time, and this letter is not going to end it. Right of the bat, Rav Yisroel Weiss (RYW) in his response to my letter makes a false claim, that I admit "All sheitles come from India"! It does not honor the Rabbanus making false statements, especially when it can be easily verified by checking the source. RYW goes on to claim that I wrote Rav Elyashiv (RE) and Rav Dunner (RD) made a mistake! I offer a free Indian Avoda Zara (AZ) sheitel to the first MM (registered) reader who can show where I wrote that. What I did write is, that the way Rav Dunner (RD) collected his testimony he presented to RE, cannot be accepted as accurate, and that the evidence was poorly collected (by his own account, as will be explained shortly). It's RYW own interpretation that I wrote RE and RD made a mistake, since I would never attribute to Rav Elyashiv, who was Gadol Hador making mistakes! It has to be clear, we are not dealing here with an issue that depends on a sevara or lamdus, but on Metziut! (reality), so against Rav Dunner's evidence presented to Rav Elyashiv that the hair is considered AZ, there is a mountain of evidence that it's not.
I have no particular interest in the subject, but I do have an interest in the truth, so when an ad claiming that my Rav, Rav Dovid Feinstein Z"TL (RDF) ruled that Indian sheitles are considered AZ, I called Rav Shmuel Fuerst, who told me Sheker Vechazav! Last week I spoke to Rav Shmuel Fishelis (Rav Dovid's son in law, who consulted with the MTJ mashgiach, Rav Chaim Ganzweig) and the MTJ Rosh Yeshiva Rav Berl Feinstein (Rav Dovid's eldest son), and both told me that RDF never ruled that they have a din of AZ, he just instructed those who asked him not to wear them, as he did not want to go against the psak of RE, since RDF himself never looked into the matter. So this affirms the Mesiach Lefi Tumo I heard from that very well known anonymous person, whose identity I revealed by his permission to the MM Editor. Now RYW, why ask an anonymous grandson when you could have asked any of above mentioned, who are surly a more reliable source than a grandson, as each one of these great Talmidei Chachamim spent many years with RDF in the Yeshiva!
RYW, if that is not enough, last week I asked Rav Chaim Shabbos his opinion about the poster. Rav Shabbos answered that he knows for "sure" RDF held there is no din of AZ in the sheitles! His source was Rav Baruch Moskowitz (RBM, mechaber of teshuvot Vedibarta Bam), who is the number one source for psakim of RDF, as they learned together bechavrusa for many many years. We called RBM and he affirmed it. He went on to explain that RDF did not have an opinion in the matter, as in general he held that since RE is the Gadol Hador, you have to follow his psak, but what it says in the ad "That the Daas Torah of Rav Dovid Feinstein was that there is AZ in the hair from the temple", is totally misleading, since RDF was never "mevarer" the subject himself. But even more than that he added, RDF said that the issue is only if you know for sure that the hair comes from that particular temple in Tirupati, or if it can be "mevurar" (ascertained) that it is from there. But since there is no way you can know for sure, he paskend that you can buy any sheitel in the market! RBM concluded, that contrary to what is claimed in the ad, RDF never said that the psak of Rav Moshe that the sheitles are mutar is not relevant anymore. What RDF did say is, that “if” the metzius is like what Rav Duner presented to Rav Elyashiv, then of course you can’t rely on the heter from Rav Moshe, again, only “if” the metzius is like that. So the big question here is what is the metzius. By now it's clear that the poster is wrong and misleading, as are all the other posters and ads published by the Avodah Zarah Awareness Association, whatever their ulterior motives are.
In another letter, I'm accused by Shalom Mass of being motzi shem ra. Shalom, what I described is Rav Dunner's own account. I would appreciate if anyone could answer why was Rav Dovid Aryeh Morgenstern prevented from being present in the meeting? Why did Rav Dunner refuse to appear in front of the Bais Din Rav Elyashiv asked Rav Feival Cohen to convene to clarify the matter? Where did you see that I paskend anything in my letter? Do I have to be a posek to ask these questions? RYW, why not call Rav Feival Cohen and Rav Morgenstern and ask them for answers to these questions?
One last very important point, the hair shaving ceremony is going on for many centuries, the facts about it are well known and documented, that is that it's done for cleanliness and humility only. Again, this is a shaila of metziut, so why not organize a group of Talmidey Chachamim from both sides of the aisle, they should go together to Tiripati and mevarer the metziut in front of each other and shalom al Yisroel, there will be one less machlokes in klal Yisroel to fight over. This for sure will bring Mashiach closer.
