Q:

What's the reason for the minhag to eat matzoh balls on Pesach?

A:

This man here is asking why we eat matzoh kneidelech on Pesach. Well, first of all, not everybody eats it, so I'm not speaking for everybody. But as far as those who do, what's the reason for eating it? Because it tastes good.

היום כ"ז ניסן חל היארצייט של מרן רבי אביגדור בן רבי ישראל הכהן זצ"ל.

What's the benefit of lighting a candle for a person's yartzeit?

When someone is nifter and candles are lit for that person, it is a kavod for the meis. And that's because a candle is a beautiful symbol. A flame is a beautiful thing, and even today it's hard to explain exactly how it works. The physical materials - the wick, the wax, the oil - turn into light. That symbolizes the neshama that was enclosed in a guf and is now only neshama. It's now ohr. Like the ohr of the candle that has been transformed from physical materials into light, the guf has been transformed into neshama. And the neshama is now ohr, shining in Olam Habah. And when we light the candle and show that we recognize this truth, it gives nachas to the neshama.

When someone passes away, that person doesn't stop existing. The neshama is real and it is existing in Olam Habah. And the neshama can still feel and recognize these things. So when the nifter is honored by the family when they light a yartzeit candle, it is a nachas ru'ach for the neshama. The symbol of the light that comes from the wax and the wick is an important thing. And ohr is a tremendous thing. Not only the sunlight. But even artificial light is such a gift! Every Motzei Shabbos we make a special bracha on artificial ohr. Borei me'orei ha'aish. A bracha on fire, on electric light, on other lights. It's a great blessing to have artificial light. And therefore, the light of the candle is a beautiful symbol. It's a symbol for the neshama that has turned from gashmi'us into ruchni'us. And the neshama in the next world is happy that people are lighting the candle and recognizing the truth of the Next World. It's a nachas ru'ach for the neshama.

ON HARAV MILLER’S YAHRZEIT:
Today is the eighteenth Yahrzeit of the legendary and incomparable HaRav Avigdor Miller, Z’tl, so much of whose life was dedicated to helping the lives of others become accomplished and complete. We provide below three separate examples of his teachings on personal brachos and tefillos, as originally brought by Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen, Shlita in Rabbi Avigdor Miller Speaks (Volume 1, pp. 227, 234--Artscroll), and as highlighted in the masterful work Praying With Fire 2 by Rabbi Heshy Kleinman, Shlita (p.172-3, p.186--Artscroll).

1.When a customer walks in, say a quick Tefillah that the customer should buy your merchandise and pay the right price and not complain…HaKadosh Baruch Hu will say: “I see you trusting in Me, as the Pasuk states “Blessed is the man who puts his trust in Hashem, and, therefore, Hashem will reward him by becoming his trust.”

If you are going to see a customer [at his place of business], before you walk in say “Yehi Ratzon Milefanecha She’tatzlicheni—Hashem, please make me successful!

Hakhel Note: Of course, one should analogize to his everyday situations relating to projects, meeting with superiors at work, shopping, eating Kosher, dating,…everything in life!

2. Even where Tefillas HaDerech is not required, if you are starting up your car, ask Hashem without making a bracha for safety and everything else you need on the way… “Believe me—in town you need a lot of help from Hashem!”

3. “Good Morning” is not merely a trite phrase or pleasantry. Good morning means that they should have a good breakfast, that they should earn a good living, no colds today, no trouble in business. Good Morning means everything!

Hakhel Note: Imagine the meaning and power of a sincere “Have a Good Day!”

Endless Chasdei Hashem

Rabbi Miller took nothing for granted — not the smallest detail, nor the most common phenomena. Once as he ascended the stairs of his apartment, unaware that someone was behind him, he was heard saying, “Thank You, Hashem, for the banister.” He thanked Hashem for the carpet on the steps, for the lining in his jacket, for his pockets. He recalled how his rebbi pointed out the chessed that buttonholes were reinforced. He appreciated the tip of his shoelace, enabling him to push it through the hole.

A grandchild was once in the hospital with him. In the middle of the night, thinking his grandson was sleeping on the chair next to him, he got up for some water. He made a careful berachah, took a sip and then said to his Best Friend, “Ich dank eich — I thank You.”

With enthusiasm and pleasure he would talk about the gratitude he had for a glass of water — what he called an “elixir of life!” Years before, Macy’s sold bottled New York City tap water for two dollars for tourists. Someone purchased one for him and he kept it at his feet by his seat in the shul, to remind him that every glass of water — even New York City tap water — had monetary value.

Every time Rabbi Miller saw a full cupboard or refrigerator, he was filled with gratitude and reflected on “Uv’sava kilkaltanu — In times of satiation it is You Who is providing.”

Rabbi Miller once picked up an apple from his table, which often had some fruit on it, and took a deep breath. His grandson, who was watching him unobserved, overheard him saying in Yiddish: “Ay, Father in Heaven, You bothered Yourself to make this magnificent fruit. Its color is so beautiful, a deep tantalizing red.” He paused a moment to take in the color, then continued: “And You even added a smell so avory, a temptingly delicious aroma with which it is perfumed.” He paused to relish the smell. “And You did all this for me. Then You put in so much preparation in order to get it to me. You also gave me eyes, hands, teeth and a tongue, and they all benefit from this fruit. You did this all with Your kindness because You love me. And I love You so much for this …. How can I begin to thank You for all this?”

He then proceeded to make a slow berachah. After chewing slowly, he exclaimed, “Ay, Father in Heaven, exactly how we have spoken, so it is, indeed a delicious gift ….”

Rabbi Miller often related the story of the Lomzer mashgiach who saw an unhappy bachur, went over to him, took him by the lapels and began shouting, wishing him a hearty mazel tov and telling him how lucky he was and how many people would envy him. The bachur had no idea what was going on. The mashgiach said to the downtrodden bachur, “Mazel tov! You are alive!”

On both nights of Rosh Hashanah before Maariv, he would give a shiur in Rambam, Hilchos Teshuvah. The second night he would start the shiur by saying, “First of all, we have to thank Hashem for the gift of a day in the new year.” Once, he heard someone chuckle. He looked up and said, “I am very serious. Everybody say now: ‘Thank You, Hashem, for the gift of a day in the new year.’”

He was always excited about the gift of life; he never took it for granted. When he would come to the words in Shemoneh Esrei, “V’al nishmoseinu hap’kudos lach — And for our souls that are deposited with You,” people nearby could hear him stop and take a full breath. He often said, “It is a picture perfect day — and the best part is that we are still part of the picture.”

He described taking a walk during the day as “bathing in the golden rays of sunlight.” Taking in a deep breath was drinking the “cocktail” of delicious fresh air, and it would get him “intoxicated with love of Hashem.”

Once, while walking with a talmid, he kept talking about something extraordinary they were soon going to have. “Soon we will have a very special treat.” Shortly after, he again said, “It will be really special.” The bachur could not imagine what Rabbi Miller was talking about … until they turned a corner and he finally stopped at a quiet spot and said excitedly, “Now!” He proceeded to take in a very deep breath, and then instructed the bachur to inhale a full cup of another thing he referred to as an “elixir of life” — fresh air!

Complaining was simply not in his dictionary. “When it is hot,” he would say, “think that Hashem is cooking apples for you and providing free heat, and in the winter He is providing free air-conditioning. But never make a complaint.”

Someone once gave him a ride in a car that had been baking in the sun of a heat wave for hours. The driver apologized that the air conditioner was broken. Rabbi Miller said, “Mahn dichar shmeih? (Who even mentioned it?)” The issue had never even occurred to him. His joy at everyday life was so overwhelming that there was no room for complaining. Walking in the scorching sun during a heat wave a grandson overheard him saying numerous times, “Thank you, Hashem, for the sweet sun. I love You for this wonderful gift.”

When he was asked for the purpose of humidity and heat, he replied:
I’ll answer that by giving you an analogy. Here is a man who comes home and he has to go through the kitchen in order to go to the bathroom. And he tells his wife, “What? In this hot weather you’re cooking? It’s so hot in here!” So she says, “Yes, dear, I’ll turn off the stove,” and she does. When he comes out he says, “Is supper ready?” And she says, “Sorry, not tonight.”

So, too, in September all the ripe red apples are out on the stands. How does an apple become red, juicy and sweet? It’s only because Hakadosh Baruch Hu turns on the heat. The summer is the kitchen that ripens these delicious fruits that we are going to eat all winter. Therefore, are we going to complain because of the good times that are waiting for us? During a prolonged heat wave he announced, “Anyone who does not complain, ‘Oy vey, how hot it is,’ will merit Olam Haba.”

וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת ה' אֱלֹקיךָ בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ וּבְכָל מְאֹדֶךָ (דברים ו, ה)
How can a person stimulate love of Hashem?

There is a man walking in the street, and there is a big noise of traffic so nobody can hear what he's saying. He opens up his mouth and says, "I love you Hashem!"

That the wisest thing you can do. It's a mitzvas asei min haTorah, and don't think it's not true. Once you open your mouth and say it, your thoughts follow your words. A certain amount of ahava is generated by saying it.

What comes between a Jew and Hashem?

We must turn our backs to the philosophies of the nations, as our people have always done. The darkness created by them, and by the misguided of Israel who imitate them, prevents the seeker from beginning his ascent. They are a wall between us and Hashem; they and the Jewish secularists prevent the Jewish masses from approaching the Truth.

How should we think about Hashem?

Although most people think about Hashem and are willing to say that He is all-knowing and all-wise, they do not put a lot of thought into it. But when we study Shaar Habechinah (The Gate of Examination) and we begin to realize how everything in the world is made with wisdom and with benevolence, the mind gains a picture of Hashem as a great Father and a great Benefactor.

Where do we find true wisdom?

Gedola deah, how great it is to have deah (wisdom)! "Dah kanisa mah chaser (If you have that, what don't you have)? Dah chasarta mah kanisa (If you don't have this, what do you have)?" That's everything! Everything in the world is teaching deah. And deah means first and foremost "L'daas es Hashem (to know about Hashem).

Rav Avigdor Miller on Ten Minutes to Make You Great

Q:
The Rav said tonight that we should get busy before Rosh Hashanah remembering all the good that Hashem has given us since last Rosh Hashanah. But don’t we have to spend the time we have left thinking about our sins and our behavior over the past year and making resolutions for improving this coming year?

A:
You’ll recall that I said the words, “as part of our work.” Really, there’s so much work to be done, that we don’t have time in the ensuing period, until tomorrow at sunset, to do what has to be done. But remembering all the good that Hakodosh Boruch Hu gave us this past year, and thanking Him for it, is most surely a very important part of our preparation.

So instead of worrying about fitting it all in, I’ll tell you what to do. You make sure to think for five minutes about the past year – about all the good that Hashem has given you since exactly one year ago. Do that and you’ll be a great man. And then another five minutes about resolutions for the coming year. And then you’ll be an even greater person. Those ten minutes will be a great accomplishment.

If after sitting here for an hour and a half, you’ll go out and think for five minutes, you should know that you’re an exception. You’re a dagul mei’rivavah – you’re one out of ten thousand. There’s nobody like you.

Who thinks for five whole minutes about gratitude for Hashem for the past year?! And who thinks for five minutes about making resolutions for improving himself in the coming year?! People talk about it. But that’s all. That’s why I said in the beginning of our talk, that if you do this on a small scale, then you shoot up and your head is way above everybody else.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Being Humorous

Q:
Would you say that the end result of someone who learns Torah is that he should be a humorless person in this world?

A:
You’re asking me if a person learns certain Torah subjects will he become humorless? Who cares if he’s humorless? This business that it’s a problem if a person is lacking in humor is an American attitude. We don’t find it anyplace in the kisvei hakodesh or in the divrei Chazal. You have to have humor?! No such thing.

Unless you mean cheerfulness and kindliness; but humor we don’t need. It’s a goyishe idea. It’s imported from the outside world and we can get along well without it. There’s no reason to be a humorous person.

However, when a person learns Torah he becomes patient and kindly. He won’t make jokes or pranks though. If that’s what you mean, no, he won’t make any pranks; he won’t make any mischief. But he understands other people and he tries to make them happy. It’s all gemilus chassodim. A person who learns Torah well, so he smiles at other people because he learned the gemara that taught him that it’s a mitzvah to be מלבין שיניים לחבירו, to show his white teeth to others; it means a big smile. He’s kind to people and he speaks words of consolation to them. It’s all in the gemara; it’sall in the chumash. Wherever you look, you’ll find these things. That’s what we want; that’s what the Torah teaches. But otherwise, the idea of being humorous has no place in the service of Hashem; it’s not a midda tova at all and therefore we can forget about it.

Rav Avigdor Miller on The Role of The Father

Q:
What should the role of the father be in the home?

A:
He should contribute everything that he has to give. That’s the plain and simple answer. Which means that when he comes home, before he even walks in, while he’s still holding the doorknob, he should make it his business to dispell any crabbiness, any grouchiness that he acquired during the day. Because now begins his big career in life – the career of the home.

He has to expect anything from his wife when he comes in. “All day long you’ve been in a quiet office while I’ve been suffering from these kids.” Could be she is about to give a blast at him. So while he’s holding the doorknob, he should steel himself for that blast. He should be ready for anything and he should make up his mind that יעבור עלי הכל – “No matter what is going to happen, I’m going to play my role. I’m going to be a good actor.” That’s how he should prepare himself before he goes into the home.

The only problem is if he’s home all the time – what should he do then? On Shabbos – now that’s hard! To act only in the evening, maybe, but all day Shabbos, that’s a big job! And so when he goes to shul on Shabbos he acts natural, and then when he comes home again, he should prepare again for the ordeal. And then he shouldn’t remain long in the house. He should come quickly back to the synagogue to learn. The less you’re around, the easier it is to be an actor.

But that’s only the beginning. There’s a lot more to say about what a father should be contributing to the family. He has to put in a sense of humor into the house. A father must bring with him a sense of humor. Mothers are dealing with the children all day long, so they’re worn out raw. And therefore every little problem is magnified in her eyes. Little Chaim’ll, he doesn’t eat, and it becomes such a major problem, that all the problems of the world are dwarfed in comparison. And so the father has to make a joke out of it. Of course, he to be careful to do it in such a way that she doesn’t become the butt of the joke. But it has to be a joke – “It’s not so serious; Chaim will one day be a big fat rabbi anyhow.”

A person who learns Torah well, so he smiles at other people because he learned the gemara that taught him that it’s a mitzvah to be "מלבין שיניים לחבירו ", to show his white teeth to others; it means a big smile.

Rav Avigdor Miller on New Years 2000 (Y2K)

Q:
What’s this big deal that people are making about the new year of 2000?

A:
B’etzem, in reality, there’s no such thing as the year 2000. It’s two thousand years since lo klum, since nothing. First of all, some historians says that oso ha’ish was never even born. He didn’t exist. So it’s two thousand years of counting years from nothing. And even if he did exist, it’s also from nothing.

However, resha’im could always take advantage of this propaganda. That could be. They might riot, those resha’im. Since they hear so much propaganda, they might think to make use of the opportunity to make trouble. They do that, you know. They’re good at looking for opportunities to make trouble.

And that’s why, that night, it would be a good idea to stay home. If resha’immight look to make trouble, then your responsibility is to make sure that you and your family are safe. Make it your business to stay home that night. No reason to be outside on that night. What do you need with people – low people – who are wasting their lives celebrating nothing?! It’s nothing at all. Hakodosh Boruch Hu should be matzil es kol am’cha beis Yisroel from all troubles, from all the goyim, the resha’im, who are looking for opportunities to make trouble.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Unemployment

Q:
What should a man do when he loses his job?

A:
The very first thing to do is to look for another job. That’s number one because nobody should be idle. Idleness is only a form of self-affliction because it causes illness.

And therefore even if you haven’t found a new job yet, you must find something to do. If somebody is capable of utilizing his time properly then idleness is a very great blessing – he’s being given a sabbatical by Hashem and so he can retire for a little while and learn a mesichta or learn sefarim until he regains his job. But most people are not capable of utilizing idleness and as a result they contract illnesses. הבטלה מביאה לידי שיעמום –Idleness brings to depression (Kesuvos 59b). It’s very important to be busy. In case you don’t know what to do, then do mitzvos. There are plenty of good things to do in this world, plenty of mitzvos to do to keep you busy. But the main idea to keep in mind is that a person should not be idle! He should always have something to do just for the sake of his own health.

Rav Avigdor Miller on Mesivta High Schools
Q:
If studying Hashem's creation and the emunah is such an important subject, why isn't it studied in the high schools, the mesivtas, today?

A:
If studying the halachos of Shabbos and the halachos of brachos is so important, why isn't it studied in the mesivta today? The answer is the mesivtas today are based on an old system, an European system, and they took it for granted that by the time you entered the mesivta you had learned all the things. You learned halachos in the cheder. You had learned Tanach and Tanach is emunah. That's how it was in the olden days. They had learned Tanach, and Tanach is the study of creation. They learned Tehillim. When I was a boy, we learned Tehillim as a boy. Our rebbi taught us Tehillim; we learned barchi nafshi, the wonders of creation. You couldn't learn every little thing – a lot has to be left for the individual to do – but certainly if you learned Tanach, you learned a lot. And you learned a lot of dinim too. By the time you came into the mesivta you were ready for the big task of the Jewish male to spend his days in the cheker halachah, in the milchamto shel Torah.

But today the boys who are put into mesivta don't know anything; they know nothing about emunah, and therefore certainly they're losing out. It's very important that the Chovos Halevavos, Sha'ar Habechinah should be taught today. And I would give a suggestion. Instead of the English Departments of the high schools teaching goyishe things – and very many Jewish boys and girls are ruined in the high school department of the yeshivos and this I can tell you from first-hand experience; I happen to know that it's true – if the mesivtas meant business, they could utilize the high schools to teach them emunah. And the boys and girls would come to such a strong faith in Hakodosh Boruch Hu that the high school could even be more powerful in shaping their minds and characters than anything else could be; it's a big opportunity that's going lost.
